On
1st June, 1973, Mr. D.R.A. Mountford assumed
the Headship. The past two decades have
witnessed the undertaking of a phased
programme of major works of renovation and
construction, and projects involving
alteration and additions to the existing
buildings in order to improve the existing
educational facilities in the College and the
living conditions of the Staff and domestic
servants. Two recent innovations have been
the introduction of a Computer Literacy
programme for all students in classes 6 to 12
and the introduction of co-education at the
Plus-2 stage.
One constantly repeated criticism now a days
of school such as Sherwood is that they
foster an elitist society of privileged
youth. To these critics one can but dedicate
this Souvenir in the hope that they will be
inspired by the noble traditions and ideals
which are cultivated here. If indeed the
result is an elitist snob, then such schools
have surely failed in their endeavour and the
whole effort covering over a century of
labour has been nothing but illusion and
self-deception. Can this be true? The
Sherwood experience would suggest otherwise.
Mr. Mountford retired in 2003.
